Medicaid Unwinding

Medicaid and CHIP provide health insurance coverage to millions of Americans. That coverage reached even more people during the pandemic as states were required to keep people continuously enrolled. Starting in Spring 2023 as pandemic protections ended, each state began a Medicaid Unwinding process to see which members are still eligible and to disenroll those who no longer qualify. This process is also called Medicaid redetermination or renewal.

Medicaid Unwinding ended in spring of 2024, and SEAP supported final outreach efforts in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. These efforts included partnering with grassroots organizations and supporting their work with microgrants, teleTown Halls in English and Spanish, state-specific literature, and a partnership with Propel, an app that helps low-income households manage their benefits.

GRASSROOTS PARTNER INSIGHTS

“We were able to hear the very powerful ways resident’s lives have been (and are being) negatively impacted by their loss of Medicaid, troubles navigating the appeal process, overall difficulties in accessing the healthcare system, and financial distress caused by compounding medical debt on their already stressed lives. We and our resource partners were able to either help them directly or connect them to other resources in their communities.”

“Speaking with our citizens… opened up our eyes to other areas that need attention in our area. It breaks our heart of so many struggles. This program motivated [us] to strive to find more assistance for our citizens.“
