THE SOUTH DESERVES HOUSING FOR ALL

Because all Southerners deserve access to safe and affordable housing, we support grassroots organizations working for policy changes that bring the region closer to housing for everyone.

Listening to the Region: What We Heard About Housing

In 2022, SEAP partnered with the Propel app to survey SNAP-eligible households on their biggest economic concerns two years into the pandemic, as well as where they hoped governments would apply pandemic recovery funds. More than half of the more than 3500 survey respondents listed affordable housing as a top concern for them or their communities, and nearly half wished their state and local governments would prioritize investing federal dollars into housing affordability.

In 2024, SEAP spoke with a broad range of housing advocates, including national policy analysts, statewide and local housing coalitions, housing attorneys, policy experts, and direct service providers to understand the gaps in support and infrastructure among housing advocates. In total, SEAP conducted interviews and conversations with 35 housing partners from across the South. The most common needs identified by affordable housing professionals included the ability to connect with people doing similar work in other states, and a way to learn from peers finding success in housing policy within the Southern context.

Convening Housing Advocates Across the South

In May 2025, SEAP co-hosted a regional housing convening in partnership with HousingLOUISIANA and North Carolina Housing Coalition. The convening included state and local housing organizers and policy advocates from 9 states with workshops, panels, and conversations on coalition-building, local government wins, legislative strategy, and narrative strategy. The primary goals were skill-building, field-building, and rest and rejuvenation for partners.

Concerns facing communities across the region include insurance costs, zoning, and general affordability. We are working to keep the momentum created by the convening going by co-hosting a virtual in 2025 and planning for the 2026 in-person gathering.

We have also launched a virtual community for Southern housing advocates hosted on our platform, the SEAP Table! The group is a place to share resources and ideas across state lines and housing policy areas. Request to join SEAP Table here.

Communications Support for Housing Coalitions

In spring 2025, SEAP partnered with Housing for All Tennessee, a coalition of organizations focused on affordable housing, tenants’ rights, and ending homelessness in the state. SEAP partnered with the newly formed coalition to create a logo and new website. We are also assisting additional housing coalitions in Mississippi, South Carolina, and Virginia.
